That reduction of influence of preseason rankings helped with the upswings of teams like Army (a dominant win at Buffalo didn’t hurt) and West Virginia, while Va Tech had an impressive bounce back after falling to ODU. Further up the board both LSU and Kentucky jumped 10 spots. LSU after beating up on Ole Miss and Kentucky after a convincing win over South Carolina setting up a matchup with Georgia, in a handful of weeks, presumably for the SEC East crown. The big fallers were Stanford (lost at Notre Dame), and Penn State (lost vs Ohio State). As for those teams that fell out, USC beat Arizona, but it was less than convincing, and they get less boost from a big preseason rating. South Carolina fell to Kentucky, but they’re still a good team and should find themselves trickling back up the rankings as the season goes along. Duke has been an enigma this season and continued by getting blasted by Virginia Tech at home in the first half and losing by a couple of TDs. Lastly, Boston College beat Temple after losing at Purdue last week, but they’ve been much more inconsistent as the schedule got harder and will be an interesting watch in the heart of conference season. All-in-all we’re getting clarity and ironing out some of the kinks that come with a catch all preseason rating.
