Rambling Sports: 2021 Fantasy Football - Bestball

Over the last month-ish I’ve done five best ball drafts and I wanted to share the results with you as well as the ADP from those five drafts. Two were on Underdog (18 rounds), one on Draft Kings (20 Rounds) and 2 on Drafters (20 Rounds). I had a nice smattering of picks in the middle of the round, drafting 8^th, 10^th, 9^th, 7^th, and 5^th respectively. Some stats 1152 picks, 161 QBs, 332 RBs, 503 WRs, 156 TEs, 268 unique players, 206 picked in all 5 drafts and 28 different roster constructions.

The following table breaks out those roster constructions with the most noteworthy being the 5 QB construction in Underdog 2, but the WR light drafts always intrigue me as well (11 drafts with 7 or less WRs) considering the depth at the position.

The big star of the show is the ADP which is quite fun because it gives a glimpse into actual drafts that have some stakes, I’m not gonna dig too dep into specific players but I’ve split out some things. First the players taken in all the leagues sorted by average draft spot, followed by the rest sorted by their average spot taken. (Note: These were done pre-Akers’ injury)

I will point out the high variance players in the top 36 (McCaffrey to Cooper). Adams went anywhere from 12^th to 21^st which makes sense to some extent with Rodgers still up in the air if you’re bullish he’s a late 1^st rounder and if you’re pessimistic he probably shouldn’t slip too much farther than the end of the second. Gibson is the second biggest of the group with a gap of 14 from 13 to 27. I fall towards the high end having taken Gibson 17^th in one of the drafts. Assuming his toe doesn’t hamper him too much I see no reason to think he can’t build on a spectacular rookie season. He’s deserving of a mid-2^nd round ADP and 27 seems far too late. Before you judge I was at the 9/16 in that draft and wasn’t in a position to pick him with Diggs still there at 16 where I might have considered him. Lastly the biggest variance of the top 36, Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes Went between 17 & 42 with 17 being a stark outlier as he wasn’t taken before 31 in any other draft. I took Mahomes in two drafts at 41 & 42 which seemed like great value in a best ball format where he has both the floor and the ceiling to carry a squad.

Lastly, we have my picks sorted by ADP. I won’t bore you with a breakdown of all of my picks but let’s look at the handful I picked 3 times.

JK Dobbins (34|31|29) – ADP: 30.40 – I drafted Dobbins as an upside anchor as a RB2/3 with more established guys. He’s going to have frustrating weeks, but those big weeks should be huge.

Brandon Aiyuk (65|63|55) – ADP: 61.00 – Coming off a surprisingly good year Aiyuk is primed once again to be a big part of the offense. Aiyuk fills an outside role and deeper threat role where as Deebo will be used underneath and in the sweep game.

Laviska Shenault (80|88|77) – ADP: 79.20 – All the talk has been that Shenault is primed for a more well-rounded role. Shenault has played a very unique role his rookie season and in college but he’s big bodied fast receiver and Trevor Lawrence should be able to utilize his skillset much more efficiently than Minshew.

Robert Tonyan (129|127|125) – ADP: 127.00 – I’m betting on Rodgers being back. It’s a bet I’m willing to take. If Rodgers doesn’t play for the Packers, I whole heartedly admit this one could be in trouble.

Hunter Henry (159|138|149) – ADP: 156.20 – I’m in the minority who thinks Henry will be more productive than Jonnu. I’m not certain I’m right, I am certain I left TE ‘til late much like my RB depth…

Tarik Cohen (161|154|151) – ADP: 160.20 – Hence Cohen on three of my teams. If he comes back and gets around 100 targets this is going to be a boon. The injury recovery could hamper any upside from this pick.

Cole Kmet (178|177|175) – ADP: 174.00 – I can’t believe we’re giving Jimmy Graham this much respect and not acting like there was a bunch of hype on Kmet. Take the post-hype sleeper and hope the Bears are smart enough to trust the 2^nd year TE. You know when TEs normally breakout.
