2023 NFL Draft - Positional Rankings - Pass Catchers (WRs & TEs)

This is a slightly down receiver class, not that there aren’t a number of good, productive, athletic players but because this is a class full of slightly odd body types, and players who fill niche roles. It’s a small class, with 20 players under 5’10” in my in my top 50 and 11 players under 180 pounds. I clearly like many of these players but it is good to acknowledge that roles at the next level may be limited, even if they are talented and good players. Tight ends by contrast, are big, athletic, diverse, and one of my favorite position groups in this year’s draft at a position that is relatively shallow at the NFL level and hasn’t had a good draft class in a while.

Player | Team (Conference) | Height, Weight

Catches | Adjusted Yards per Target | Production

40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard Split | Short Shuttle | 3-Cone | Vertical | Broad Jump | Role (Grade)

Explainer – Player, Team, Height, Weight are exactly what you’d think. Conference will be the conference for FBS teams and FCS/DII/DIII/NAIA outside of that. Adjusted Yards per Target (AY/T) is yards per target where rushing receiving TDs19.3 yards. It allows us to make adjustments to the typical stats and get a fuller picture than yards per attempt provides. Production is just my attempt at creating one number that generally sums up a player’s production on the field. As for testing times 40-yard dash (40) denotes long (breakaway) speed, 10-yard split (10) helps to explain acceleration and burst, Short Shuttle (SS) is a change of direction drill, 3-Cone (3C) speaks to ability to cut and accelerate out of breaks, and the Vertical (VJ) & Broad Jump (BJ) help quantify explosiveness. Role & Grade go hand in hand, and there are 5 roles:

Starter (S) - 8.0 – 7.1 – Someone who I think has the ability to make an impact early, or who I think has the ability to be a long-term starter.

Expected Starter (ES) – 7.0 – 6.1 – Someone I expect to be a starter and long-term option but who has some concerns.

Potential Starter (PS) – 6 – 4.1 – Flawed prospect, and where most fall, varied levels of, oof that could sink his career.

Backup (B) – 4 – 3.1 – Potential to make the fringes of a roster, or at least expanded squads, much work to do

UDFA (UDFA) – 3 – 2.1 – The bottom level both in athleticism and production.

Top 15 Wide Receivers

Jaxson Smith-Njigba | Ohio State (B1G) | 6’0 5/8”, 196 lbs

5 | 5.38 | 0.30

40: 4.52 | 10: 1.65 | SS: 3.93 | 3C: 6.57 | VJ: 35 in | BJ: 125 in | S (7.4)

Quentin Johnson | TCU (BXII) | 6’2 3/4”, 208 lbs

60 | 12.34 | 8.13

40: 4.52 | 10: 1.59 | SS: 4.28 | 3C: 7.31 | VJ: 40.5 in | BJ: 134 in | S (7.1)

Smith-Njigba has the size and ability to play outside receiver but his best role at the next level is probably as a souped up version of Amon-Ra St. Brown. His agility drills (short shuttle and 3-cone) were absolutely fantastic, and while he’s not a burner he’s got plenty of speed to get open vertically. Johnson is more of your classic outside receiver, he’s not a burner either but he’s explosive, has good feet, and doesn’t shy from contact.

Zay Flowers | Boston College (ACC) | 5’9 1/4", 182 lbs

78 | 10.55 | 9.04

40: 4.42 | 10: 1.49 | SS: x.xx | 3C: x.xx | VJ: 35.5 in | BJ: 127 in | ES (6.7)

Flowers is the top of the undersized slots for me. He’s on the larger side of this year’s group of smaller receivers, he plays hard and mean, he’s fast and explosive, he’s a touch tight hipped limiting his ability to shake defenders but ultimately he’s a physical, tough nosed player who consistently showed up and fought on a bad team.

Jordan Addison | USC (P12) | 5’11 1/8”, 173 lbs

59 | 10.95 | 7.09

40: 4.49 | 10: 1.57 | SS: 4.19 | 3C: 7.05 | VJ: 34 in | BJ: 122 in | ES (6.5)

Average height, slight on the weight, more long speed than explosive, he runs good routes and can sustain through contact despite his size. Won top WR honor in college two years ago at Pitt.

Jonathan Mingo | Ole Miss (SEC) | 6’1 3/4”, 220 lbs

51 | 11.82 | 6.62

40: 4.46 | 10: 1.52 | SS: 4.25 | 3C: 7.04 | VJ: 39.5 in | BJ: 129 in | ES (6.5)

Big bodied receiver who ran a 4.46 at 220, played in a fun Ole Miss offense where he showed good hands, ability to control body through contact and a willingness to mix it up in the run game.

Kayshon Boutte | LSU (SEC) | 5’11 1/4", 195 lbs

48 | 7.59 | 4.00

40: 4.50 | 10: 1.56 | SS: 4.25 | 3C: 7.14 | VJ: 29 in | BJ: 118 in | ES (6.4)

Josh Downs | UNC (ACC) | 5’8 3/4", 171 lbs

94 | 8.28 | 8.54

40: 4.48 | 10: 1.51 | SS: 4.15 | 3C: 6.75 | VJ: 38.5 in | BJ: 131 in | ES (6.4)

Charlie Jones | Purdue (B1G) | 5’11 3/8”, 176 lbs

110 | 9.10 | 10.99

40: 4.43 | 10: 1.54 | SS: 4.15 | 3C: 6.84 | VJ: 36.5 in | BJ: 124 in | ES (6.3)

Boutte had a disappointing 2022 with injuries and inconsistency but he was used in the slot and split out wide, showed good understanding of finding space against zone and did a great job when things broke down to find space and make himself available for his QB. Downs is the next of the height/weight little guys, he produced well at UNC, showed burst and speed to get open and made tough catches routinely. Jones was the next man up for the Boilermakers after David Bell left and he more than stepped up into the role, catching 110 passes and routinely making big plays and getting open.

Cedric Tillman | Tennessee (SEC) | 6’3 3/8”, 213 lbs

37 | 8.05 | 3.27

40: 4.54 | 10: 1.57 | SS: x.xx | 3C: 7.32 | VJ: 37 in | BJ: 128 in | ES (6.3)

A.T. Perry | Wake Forest (ACC) | 6’3 1/2", 198 lbs

81 | 10.14 | 9.02

40: 4.47 | 10: 1.50 | SS: 4.32 | 3C: 6.81 | VJ: 35 in | BJ: 133 in | ES (6.2)

Michael Wilson | Stanford (P12) | 6’3 1/2", 198 lbs

81 | 10.14 | 9.02

40: 4.47 | 10: 1.50 | SS: 4.32 | 3C: 6.81 | VJ: 35 in | BJ: 133 in | ES (6.1)

Rashee Rice | SMU (AAC) | 6’0 5/8”, 204 lbs

96 | 10.12 | 10.67

40: 4.51 | 10: 1.50 | SS: 4.23 | 3C: 7.02 | VJ: 41 in | BJ: 128 in | ES (6.1)

Marvin Mims | Oklahoma (BXII) | 5’10 7/8”, 183 lbs

54 | 13.94 | 8.27

40: 4.38 | 10: 1.50 | SS: x.xx | 3C: 6.90 | VJ: 39.5 in | BJ: 129 in | ES (6.1)

Tillman was injured last year but when he did play, I preferred him to Hyatt in Tennessee’s offense. He routinely played on the line in the receiver stack, played and beat man coverage, showed speed and athleticism to get open make the catch and defeat players in the open field. Perry was in an odd offense at Wake but he tall, fast athletic, and explosive, tracks the ball well on deep passes. He’s a long strider, who will need to change up his pacing and route running to continue to grow at the next level. I was pleasantly surprised while watching Wilson on a terrible Cardinal team. He’s not a super elite athlete as he’s on the slim size but he’s long with great feet, the ability to shake defenders in the open field and he showed good body control and balance. Rice has a good frame and weight, ran well enough but isn’t a burner, controls his body well, needs to separate better vertically, but creates really well in the short to intermediate range, has good hands, but had a slight propensity for having the ball knocked out as he transitioned up field post catch. Mims is a burner from Oklahoma who made big play after big play, he’s slightly short, and slightly light but he’s gonna be a speed nightmare over the middle.

Nathaniel Dell | Houston (AAC) | 5’8 3/8”, 165 lbs

109 | 9.92 | 11.87

40: 4.49 | 10: 1.50 | SS: x.xx | 3C: x.xx | VJ: xx | BJ: 121 in | PS (6.0)

Tyler Scott | Cincinnati (AAC) | 5’9 7/8”, 177 lbs

54 | 12.47 | 7.40

40: 4.39 | 10: 1.50 | SS: 4.25 | 3C: 6.99 | VJ: 39.5 in | BJ: 133 in | PS (6.0)

Jalin Hyatt | Tennessee (SEC) | 6’0 1/8”, 176 lbs

67 | 14.55 | 10.70

40: 4.40 | 10: 1.50 | SS: 4.33 | 3C: 7.06 | VJ: 40 in | BJ: 135 in | PS (6.0)

Demario Douglas | Liberty (IND) | 5’8 1/4", 179 lbs

79 | 8.80 | 7.63

40: 4.44 | 10: 1.54 | SS: 4.29 | 3C: 7.05 | VJ: 39.5 in | BJ: 134 in | PS (6.0)

Dell is athletic and exciting and Downs but 10 pounds lighter. Scott tested incredibly but I was a bit disappointed by him in the open field, where he wasn’t as twitchy as I expected. I like Dell better as a player but that weight is worrisome. Hyatt isn’t bad, but he’s a one trick pony who’s undersized (goes down on first contact often), and played the off the line role in the Baylor stack that we’ve seen players like Denzel Mims and other struggle to translate to the next level from in recent years. Douglas is the last of the top 15 (and ties) and one more undersized guy, he’s explosive but slightly tight hipped he made play after play and holds his weight well.

Top 8 Tight Ends

Sam LaPorta | Iowa (B1G) | 6’3 1/4", 245 lbs

Dalton Kincaid | Utah (P12) | 6’3 5/8”, 246 lbs

70 | 9.33 | 13.74

40: INJ | 10: INJ | SS: INJ | 3C: INJ | VJ: INJ | BJ: INJ | S (7.3)

Michael Mayer | Notre Dame (IND) | 6’4 1/2", 249 lbs

67 | 9.18 | 12.95

40: 4.70 | 10: 1.61 | SS: 4.44 | 3C: 7.26 | VJ: 32.5 in | BJ: 118 in | ES (7.0)

I’m a little lower on Mayer than consensus, he’s a very good player and well-rounded but for my money there was a noticeable difference in the way he moves compared to the other two. LaPorta and Kincaid both move well, they are practically the same size (3/8” different) they both played in-line, at H-back, in the slot, and on the outside. I thought all three players blocked incredibly well both in space and against defensive linemen, I just prefer the movement skills of LaPorta and Kincaid as an upside modifier.

Zack Kuntz | Old Dominion (SBC) | 6’7 3/8”, 255 lbs

12 | 9.61 | 2.43

40: 4.55 | 10: 1.55 | SS: 4.12 | 3C: 6.87 | VJ: 40 in | BJ: 128 in | ES (6.7)

Darnell Washington | Georgia (SEC) | 6’6 5/8”, 272 lbs

28 | 10.95 | 6.45

40: 4.64 | 10: 1.61 | SS: 4.08 | 3C: x.xx | VJ: 31 in | BJ: 122 in | ES (6.6)

Tucker Kraft | South Dakota State (FCS) | 6’4 3/4", 254 lbs

27 | 9.44 | 4.02

40: 4.63 | 10: 1.60 | SS: 4.29 | 3C: 7.08 | VJ: 36.5 in | BJ: 122 in | ES (6.4)

Luke Schoonmaker | Michigan (B1G) | 6’5 1/4", 251 lbs

35 | 8.50 | 6.26

40: 4.63 | 10: 1.59 | SS: 4.27 | 3C: 6.81 | VJ: 35.5 in | BJ: 127 in | ES (6.3)

Luke Musgrave | Oregon State (P12) | 6’5 7/8”, 251 lbs

11 | 10.46 | 2.42

40: 4.61 | 10: 1.54 | SS: 4.41 | 3C: 7.09 | VJ: 36 in | BJ: 125 in | ES (6.1)

Kuntz is a move tight end or H-back to start off but the athleticism shows up constantly, he’s a willing blocker if in need of refinement and he’s a bit on the raw side. Washington is athletically freaky for his size, he’s a more athletic version of Mercedes Lewis, and will weird benefit him as he struggled getting low enough against smaller competition while blocking. Kraft was used as an H-back at South Dakota State but in their offense was used as blocker from that position quite often and blocked downhill. Showed very good athleticism against lesser competition and has agility times on par with the second tier of WRs. Schoonmaker at 6’5”+ and 250+ lbs has great feet and enough, and was used in a well-rounded role at Michigan. Our last TE is Musgrave who I’m lower on than many, although mostly because he was hampered by injuries and only had 11 catches in 2022, played in-line at Oregon State blocked well enough, and flashed athleticism in limited samples.
