2023 NFL Draft - Positional Rankings - Front Seven (INT/Edge/OBLB)

The front seven or at least the front four have never been more important in the game of football. Interior linemen, linemen who play heads up on the tackle or inside of that, edge rushers 4-3 DEs and 3-4 OLBs, and off ball linebackers (OBLB), 4-3 LBs, 3-4 ILBs. OBLBs have become devalued while also being one of the most obvious weak spots in a defense against the pass when bad. Much like RBs the NFL has made it clear how they value the position. This class is bad pretty poor for interior linemen, there is one really good player, and a handful of intriguing players, and then it’s rough. Edge rusher has one elite rusher and 10 more players who I’d expect to become starters. There’s good depth in the class. OBLB has three excellent prospects in my opinion with a bunch of prospects with flaws, stronger up top but kind of similar to the wide receiver class.

Player | Team (Conference) | Height, Weight

Tackles | Tackles for Loss | Sacks | Forced Fumbles | Production

40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard Split | Short Shuttle | 3-Cone | Vertical | Broad Jump | Role (Grade)

Explainer – Player, Team, Height, Weight, Tackles, Tackles for Loss (TFLs), Sacks, and Forced Fumbles are exactly what you’d think. Conference will be the conference for FBS teams and FCS/DII/DIII/NAIA outside of that. Production is just my attempt at creating one number that generally sums up a player’s production on the field. 40-yard dash (40) weirdly correlates to for linemen especially tackles, 10-yard split (10) ability to accelerate and get off the line, Short Shuttle (SS) ability to move and change directions horizontally, 3-Cone (3C) correlates with the ability to move and change directions and closely resembles pulling (3-cone and short shuttle are the two that teams really focus on for lienmen), and the Vertical (VJ) & Broad Jump (BJ) help quantify explosiveness and ability to convert power form the hips. Role & Grade go hand in hand, and there are 5 roles:

Starter (S) - 8.0 – 7.1 – Someone who I think has the ability to make an impact early, or who I think has the ability to be a long-term starter.

Expected Starter (ES) – 7.0 – 6.1 – Someone I expect to be a starter and long-term option but who has some concerns.

Potential Starter (PS) – 6 – 4.1 – Flawed prospect, and where most fall, varied levels of, oof that could sink his career.

Backup (B) – 4 – 3.1 – Potential to make the fringes of a roster, or at least expanded squads, much work to do

UDFA (UDFA) – 3 – 2.1 – The bottom level both in athleticism and production.

Top 5 Interior Linemen

Jalen Carter | Georgia (SEC) | 6’3”, 323 lbs

24 Tackles | 7 TFLs | 3 Sacks | 2 FF | 124.25 Prod

40: x.xx | 10: x.xx | SS: x.xx | 3C: x.xx | VJ xx | BJ: xx | S (7.4)

Carter is the best interior player in the draft, he has some decision-making questions off the field, but it’s immediately obvious when watching these guys that Carter possesses something the others don’t. He’s explosive, has varied moves, and dominates physically. Production is a bit on the low side but he’s disruptive even if he’s not getting the ultimate finish. On a loaded Georgia D in 2021 he was considered by many the best player on the field.

Calijah Kancey | Pittsburgh (ACC) | 6’0”, 280 lbs

24 Tackles | 14.5 TFLs | 7 Sacks | 0 FF | 180.13 Prod

40: 4.67 | 10: 1.58 | SS: 4.36 | 3C: 7.00 | VJ 33.5 in | BJ: 112 in | ES (7.0)

Keeanu Benton | Wisconsin (B1G) | 6’3 3/4", 309 lbs

27.5 Tackles | 10 TFLs | 10 Sacks | 0 FF | 190.38 Prod

40: 5.08 | 10: 1.74 | SS: 4.65 | 3C: 7.34 | VJ 29.5 in | BJ: 111 in | ES (6.9)

Adetomiwa Adebawore | Northwestern (B1G) | 6’0 5/8”, 282 lbs

32.5 Tackles | 9 TFLs | 5 Sacks | 2 FF | 131.88 Prod

40: 4.49 | 10: 1.55 | SS: 4.26 | 3C: 7.13 | VJ 37.5 | BJ: 125 | ES (6.8)

Colby Wooden | Auburn (SEC) | 6’4”, 278 lbs

40.5 Tackles | 11.5 TFLs | 6 Sacks | 3 FF | 187.63 Prod

40: 4.79 | 10: 1.63 | SS: 4.43 | 3C: 7.49 | VJ xx | BJ: 115 | ES (6.6)

Of the rest of the top 5, Kancey & Adebawore both tested insanely well but are 6 footers with smaller frames… relatively speaking of course. Kancey is a bit more disruptive and penetrates well but does get pushed around a bit at times. Adebawore played inside and outside at Northwestern he showed flashes of his athleticism but if I didn’t know he ran 4.49 I wouldn’t have noticed it on film. Benton tested better than expected but he’s not the level of athlete of those two, nor Wooden for that matter, but he is consistent shows burst, penetrates well, and made plays consistently at Wisconsin. Wooden played a hybrid role at Auburn, he should be a 3t who can bump out to edge in special packages and to mix up fronts, which should be something he’s very comfortable doing and well equipped for. None of the interior linemen, outside of Carter are special special, and again the rest of the class is pretty underwhelming.

Strong steady player, good hands, stand up or hand in the group. He’s not an athletic freak but he’s consistently in the right place, and plays half the man consistently.

Tyree Wilson | Texas Tech (BXII) | 6’5 5/8”, 271 lbs

Wilson is big, strong hands, converts speed to power well, he’s got a great inside counter. Could use a little polish on his straight rushes but he shows good hip flex. If Harrison had bend, he’s be starter level, but he has good burst, strong hands with varied moves He gets penetration consistently, is strong at the point of attack, and has a great motor.

Smith is gonna go higher than I’ll have him and I get it he’s a physical beast, but he’s slight, has trouble disengaging but he’s great in space and utilizes his speed well. I personally think he’d be a perfect OBLB project and a player than could be the perfect response to the breakout of the bigger fast slot. McDonald is a touch raw but he was productive and disruptive at Iowa State, he’s a similar weight to Smith but carries it in a much more solid form. He’ll benefit from being stood up in a 3-4 and allowed to use his length and burst off the edge. Anudike-Uzomah surprised me, he turns the edge well, has great feet and agility, and is a big-bodied productive guy. Van Ness is an athletic freak, he’s stout, strong at the point of attack, and raw as hell. He has everything to be a disruptive edge and all-around player and I think he’ll get there but there’s a ways to go.

Simpson, for me, is the what I think the prototype is going to be going forward, big hitter downhill in the blitz and run game, gets off blocks but agile enough to move in space and at least disrupt slots and tight ends. Campbell and Sanders, while not dinosaurs are great and good, respectively, athletically but you notice their top speed limitations from time to time. Both are very good with Campbell getting the edge but that’s the biggest difference between them and Simpson.

Nick Herbig | Wisconsin (B1G) | 6’2 1/8”, 240 lbs

40 Tackles | 15.5 TFLs | 2 PDs | 2 FF | 234.61 Prod

Herbig is a bigger guy who also played edge a fair amount for the Badgers. He’s not quite there to be a full-time edge guy but he’ll be useful in both rush situations and off the ball where he played in the flats and intermediate middle quite often. Overshown is undersized but he hits hard, covers ground quickly but needs to do a better job shucking blocks. He generally gets through traffic alright but when engaged he needs to get a bit stronger.
