2019 NFL Draft: Positional Rankings: Wide Receivers

There are a lot of archetypes this year in the draft, i.e. guys with a specific set of skills, but finding a well-rounded receiver who will come in and be your #1 is going to be a bit of a crapshoot. In that way it reminds me a lot of the 2016 draft that saw five receivers go before Michael Thomas but has produced some solid producers in specific roles (Sterling Shepard & Tyler Boyd in the slot, Tyreek Hill as a burner, and a handful of useful return men late in the draft). Much like one of Stefan’s bars on SNL this draft has everything… fast guys, big guys with some speed, quick jitter bug types and big guys who can jump and box out.

Name | School (Conference) | Height Weight | My Grade
Targets | Adj. Yards per Target | 40 time, 10 yard split, 3-cone, Short Shuttle, Vertical Jump, Broad Jump | Production Score
Note: A quick reminder, the grades are on the 20-80 scale stolen from baseball scouting and the grade groups are Starter (S), Expected Starter (ES), Potential Starter (PS), Backup (B), and Undrafted Free Agent (UDFA).

Campbell gets my top spot here because of his game breaking speed, ability to find the spaces in a defense and because he’s one of the few I watched in this class who showed that breakaway speed consistently when you watched. He will have to expand his route tree at the next level, but he lined up all over the field for Ohio State this season. Behind him Miles Boykin and N’Keal Harry are both big bodied receivers who move well in space and are consistent when dealing with disruption in their area. Harry specifically is the embodiment of the big slot movement with his ability to get in and out of breaks, but I don’t think he needs to be pigeon holed as a slot but might start off a bit like Michael Thomas where he transitions into the league through the slot. Emanuel Hall is quick in a straight line as well as in and out of breaks. He has too many drops, but he more than makes up for it with his play on the outside. Lastly, in this group we have A.J. Brown. Brown was ultra productive for Ole Miss last season but he’s more than just a slot he has the size and speed to be an asset to move around an offense and make a quarterback’s job that much easier.

DK Metcalf is the Rorschach test of WR; You see what you want to see. Well at least people see what he is/can be differently. He’s a tight hipped athlete that doesn’t move horizontally well, but he’s insanely fast/explosive in a straight line and if he can stay healthy he will be a bulked up Ted Ginn. Also, he’s one of those air raid only played one side of the field guys and that’s a knock if not a major one. Meet WR draft problem #2, JJ Arcega-Whiteside. JJAW has great hands, is insane at contested catches and moves well for a bigger bodied receiver but he doesn’t separate consistently, and I can’t help but remember what happened with Josh Doctson. McLaurin is a projection, there were flashes in his game and his athletic testing was incredible, but it was clear that there was more trust with Parris Campbell at Ohio State. Butler is a player that some have as their WR1 but much like JJAW I didn’t think he separated well and didn’t really see that 4.48 speed translate in his route running. He’s a big guy who moves well enough (insane 4.16 short shuttle) but to me he look like a receiver who could maul college CBs but may struggle against the best of the best. Andy Isabella was super productive at UMASS but against top competition he was shut down until the game was out of control and then found himself open against a backup defense sitting back, add in the fact that he’s undersized and has a fair amount of wasted movement in his game I think he’ll have a chance as a slot guy but he might need some refinement first. Samuel is a projection based on his breakout his freshman year and his inconsistency since, but I don’t mind a bet on a talented player who failed to put it all together (see: Stefan Diggs, et. al.). Morgan just kept jumping off the tape for a Nebraska offense that couldn’t find consistency. Strong at the catch point, Morgan can separate and runs good routes and may be my favorite (not the best) receiver in the draft.

Gary Jennings Jr. | West Virginia (Big XII) | 6’ 1” 214 lbs | Grade: 6.0 (PS)
Stats: 73 Tar. | 16.00 AY/T | 73.97% Catch | 40:4.43, 10: 1.55, 3C: 7.32, SS: 4.15, VJ: 37, BJ: 127 | 11.71
Jazz Ferguson | Northwestern State (FCS) | 6’ 4 5/8” 227 lbs | Grade: 6.0 (PS)
Stats: 112 Tar. | 12.37 AY/T | 60.71% Catch | 40:4.45, 10: 1.57, 3C: 7.14, SS: 4.34, VJ: 37, BJ: 123 | 11.39
Jennings has everything but overly flashy tape and loose hips, and those unfortunately are related. Jennings found space in the WVU air raid but you could see the inability to change direction quickly on tape and that caused a drop despite a productive season and solid athletic testing. Jazz Ferguson is an FCS version of what people want Hakeem Butler to be. He’s a bit behind Butler because level of competition but everything I said about Butler applies to Ferguson who got open more often against lesser competition.
