2019 NFL Draft: Positional Ranks: Interior Defensive Linemen

This year’s interior D-line class is indeed something to write home about. It contains freak athletes, high motors, gap cloggers, and anything else you’re looking for. It also contains a few players that played out of position in college which makes the projections fun. As a reminder this list is just non-edge rushers so 3-4 linemen and DT in a four-man front.

Name | School (Conference) | Height Weight | My Grade
Tackles for Loss | Sacks | Passes Defensed | 40 time, 10 yard split, 3-cone, Short Shuttle, Vertical Jump, Broad Jump | Production Score
Note: A quick reminder, the grades are on the 20-80 scale stolen from baseball scouting and the grade groups are Starter (S), Expected Starter (ES), Potential Starter (PS), Backup (B), and Undrafted Free Agent (UDFA).
Rankings to this point – QB | RB | TE | OL

Top 10
Ed Oliver | Houston (American) | 6’ 1 7/8” 287 lbs | Grade: 7.7 (S)
14.5 TFLs | 3 Sacks | 2 PDs | 40: 4.73, 10: 1.63, 3C: 7.15, SS: 4.22, VJ: 36, BJ: 120 | 175.63
Quinnen Williams | Alabama (SEC) | 6’ 3” 303 lbs | Grade: 7.6 (S)
19.5 TFLs | 8 Sacks | 1 PDs | 40: 4.83, 10: 1.67, 3C: INJ, SS: INJ, VJ: 30.5, BJ: 113 | 245.50
I’m in the minority at the top of my interior players but I think the upside of Ed Oliver trumps all. He’s an incredible athlete that has been held back by poor scheme putting him in a position that didn’t utilize him well and he was still incredibly productive over his three seasons. Also, Quinnen Williams is really good and even though he’s going to go before Oliver in the draft it will in no way be a bad pick.

Jeffery Simmons | Mississippi State (SEC) | 6’ 2 3/4” 300 lbs | Grade: 7.3 (S)
17 TFLs | 2 Sacks | 4 PDs | 40: INJ, 10: INJ, 3C: INJ, SS: INJ, VJ: INJ, BJ: INJ | 214.50
Christian Wilkins | Clemson (ACC) | 6’ 3 1/4" lbs | Grade: 7.2 (S)
14.5 TFLs | 5.5 Sacks | 2 PDs | 40: 5.04, 10: 1.76, 3C: N/a, SS: 4.55, VJ: 29.5, BJ: 107 | 194.00
In my second group of starting caliber players Simmons is a very similar disruptive force to Quinnen while Wilkins is our first true nose/1 tech who will clog the middle. Oliver should play 3-tech (outside shade of the guard) or 5-tech, Quinnen and Simmons should move around between 0/1/3/5 so you have great versatility at the top of the class.

Rashan Gary | Michigan (Big Ten) | 6’ 4 3/8” 277 lbs | Grade: 7.0 (ES)
7.5 TFLs | 3.5 Sacks | 0 PDs | 40: 4.58, 10: 1.61, 3C: 7.26, SS: 4.29, VJ: 38, BJ: 120 | 95.13
Jerry Tillery | Notre Dame (Independent) | 6’ 6 1/2" 295 lbs | Grade: 6.9 (ES)
10.5 TFLs | 8 Sacks | 0 PDs | 40: 4.93, 10: 1.69, 3C: 7.45, SS: 4.33, VJ: 32, BJ: 115 | 152.13
Cortez Broughton | Cincinnati (American) | 6’ 2 1/4" 293 lbs | Grade: 6.8 (ES)
16.5 TFLs | 5.5 Sacks | 5 PDs | 40: 4.98, 10: 1.75, 3C: 7.65, SS: 4.57, VJ: 33.5, BJ: 113 | 249.63
Gerald Willis III | Miami (FL) (ACC) | 6’ 1 3/4" 302 lbs | Grade: 6.8 (ES)
18 TFLs | 4 Sacks | 2 PDs | 40: 5.17, 10: 1.80, 3C: INJ, SS: INJ, VJ: 27, BJ: 103 | 212.63
Trysten Hill | UCF (American) | 6’ 2 3/4" 308 lbs | Grade: 6.7 (ES)
10.5 TFLs | 3 Sacks | 0 PDs | 40: 5.04, 10: 1.73, 3C: 7.70, SS: 4.38, VJ: 35, BJ: 115 | 114.25
Dexter Lawrence | Clemson (ACC) | 6’ 4 1/2" 342 lbs | Grade: 6.6 (ES)
7.5 TFLs | 1.5 Sacks | 3 PDs | 40: 5.05, 10: 1.76, 3C: N/a, SS: N/a, VJ: N/a, BJ: N/a | 117.38
My Oliver take is a bit of a stretch compared to most, but Gary might be the most controversial part of these rankings. He played DE in a 4-3 scheme at Michigan and had some disruption but was relatively disappointing considering his talent and athleticism. At the next level Gary should be a bigger 3-tech or an edge setting 5-tech but he will need to be much more consistent both in technique and effort, as he appeared to switch off at times last season in Ann Arbor. Tillery nailed his workout but will need to get off blocks better at the next level against the run. On numerous occasions he spins away from a block during the play but has no idea where the ball is and loops up field as he turns around. Broughton is my favorite non-Oliver player in this class. He was disruptive against all levels of competition and just seemed to have a nose for how to screw up opponents plans. Willis III is a projection based on what I saw and now how he tested. He needs to be a bit more focused with his attacks at the line of scrimmage but he was consistently productive and able to extend and shed once engage with linemen. Trysten Hill was in the backfield a lot at UCF but he was far too often out of control once he got penetration. A DC will need to reign him in but they’ll have a hell of a ball player when they do. Lastly, Dexter Lawrence takes up space and doesn’t give ground. He isn’t a disrupter like his teammate Wilkins but he has the moves to disrupt when he see an opportunity. He’s the guy who’s going to keep your linebackers clean and occupy two interior offensive linemen.
