2020 Fantasy Football - 2nd Ranks - Tight Ends

This new set of rankings certainly has been interesting to write about and look at from a me and them perspective as well as trying hard not to focus too much on players I know I rambled about last time (I fail at this multiple times). This new set of ranks is based around my newest set of projections (new projection here) which saw some changes due to camp news, injuries, and COVID but also, mostly, by how I imagine the season will play out and how teams will play.

I’ll spoil this because the only thing you’re going to take away from all this is… I have Goedert and Ertz in the top 5, and I have Cook at 28. There you go, now you won’t have to read too much about TEs.

Column Key – Player (Duh), Rank (My Positional Rank), Team (Duh, again), FP (Fantasy Points), Pos ADP (Positional ADP), Diff (Difference between Rank and Pos ADP), 1st Rank (My First Rank), Diff (Difference between this rank and my 1st rank), 1st Pos ADP (First Positional ADP), and Diff (Difference between Pos ADP and 1st Pos ADP)

No changes for me, Waller is a year out from a drop due to the Raiders having a professional receiving corps for the first time in a few years but this year I think his production is generally safe.

No huge changes or differences except the big one. Last year the two Philly TEs combined for 222 targets, my projections have them combining for 207 targets, and bridging the target gap between them, making them both 100+ target tight ends and I think relatively reasonable shouts for a pair of top 10 TEs without too much griping about receivers or running back targets. Also I made this a larger tier with Andrews and Waller, I maybe shouldn’t have because

Two southeasterners and a Hawkeye enter a tier diametrically opposed, foes… I’m sorry that’s Hamilton. All three guys are 2 spots off ADP, I could care less but I like doing rankings so that’s interesting. Also moved Higbee up a few spots from last rank.

Why do we hate Chris Herndon after we all loved him heading into last season despite the suspension? I know he was hurt last season but the only competition for targets is Crowder and, I guess, Perriman. There are a bunch of questionable situations at TE, but Herndon seems to be relatively clean and a low end TE2 seems far too pessimistic. I love Dawson Knox, despite hating everything about his situation and how it changed this offseason. Honestly, you could talk me into ranking him anywhere from 18 to 26 and I’d still be a full TE tier high on him. In fact, I dropped him a spot from last rank and ADP dropped him 12 on no news or change in situation. So… Yeah!?!

A quartet of players I’m higher on which means there’s some shouting from many of you coming. Or not we’re well into the TE2s so who cares? Even, with TD regression Darren Fells on a similar amount of targets, a small adjustment up of his yards per target towards his career average and you get another very useful season from Fells. Ditto for Thomas, a split there is less useful in Houston versus in Philly, but both should be useful backup options. Sample is the nominal starter in Cincinnati, but I think you could make a case that he’s the 6th or 7th best option in Cincinnati.

I really don’t like Jared Cook, and that’s after I moved him up five spots in the rankings.  And as I look and try to defend myself. I don’t have a good reason, I expect his TD rate and yards per target to come down, but he should see more targets, but also a 32-year-old who just had a career year in touchdowns, makes me nervous when there are better options up top. Long story, short… I’m probably wrong.
