2025 NFL Draft - Wide Receivers

 

After a blockbuster 2024 wide receiver class, the 2025 class is a good compliment but not a challenger by any means. When I say a good compliment, I mean this class has some talented but flawed receivers who are probably on the whole best suited for WR2 roles. That said there are a few guys with fringe WR1 sets and some guys with unique skill sets. All in all it was an interesting if a bit frustrating at WR this year.

While this class does not have the upside of last year I still like the top of it. McMillan is my top guy, he has strong hand and does a good job using his length to go out and snatch the ball, he ran good enough but not spectacularly but knows how to vary up his releases and the pacing of his routes to get open downfield. He does have some issues with jams at the line but the way he has approached the rest of his game makes me believe he can learn to deal with that better and potentially bulk up a bit at the next level. Hunter is a special case in this draft as he’ll be evaluated on both sides of the ball. I tend to lean a bit towards WR being the best place for him to stick at the next level as his agility, understanding of the game and ball skills would suit him perfectly as a thorn in any defenses’ side. He still needs some refinement in how he attacks his routes but you can see the heights he could achieve with more training. Golden came on during the season as the Longhorns made him the focal receiving point in their offense. I think he could be an absolute menace in the slot at the next level with the ability to bounce outside with his speed and size, especially if he can refine his abilities at the point of attack.

Egbuka has been overshadowed by great receivers at Ohio State over his five seasons there but he’s been a consistently presence in the Buckeyes offense. He’s a good technician and route running, with great hands and body control, and while I don’t think his ultimate upside is as a WR1 I think he’s a Tyler Lockett+ type of WR2 who will be very good at propelling a passing game and making sure a defense can never truly key on just one player. Burden was the top player in his recruiting class and has certainly shown flashes especially with competent quarterback play. This past season he at times seemed relegated to a decoy to draw defenses and it certainly seemed like that frustration leaked over at times. That said Burden has excellent body control, good short area quickness, and suddenness in the open field. There is scuttlebutt that teams have some worries but he’s obviously talented and stands out from his peers with what he’s able to do on a football field.

Noel & Higgins are kind of the archetypical ideal match of receiver’ skill sets in a corps. Noel is fast, but more importantly shit and agile in the short areas opening up big play opportunities in the middle of the field. Higgins is big and fast and while he has some wiggle he just didn’t get open as consistently as Noel and didn’t make the big plays as consistently. Bond is tricky on the field but it should be noted, more importantly, that he was charged with sexual assault in the run up to the draft. On field Bond is athletic and shows it consistently but he doesn’t show up consistently in other important areas. He can be lazy/lethargic in his routes and with his hands. Bond has physical traits that can be matched by few in this draft whether he pans out is up to the intangibles that are so elusive without intimate knowledge of someone else. Williams is a fun watch, and productive, with varied releases and twitchy. He can play inside or outside, though I favor inside, but there was just something that left me wanting a bit more that I couldn’t put my finger on. Lane is a gamble on athletic tools that show up on tape but weren’t necessarily utilized consistently at Virginia Tech but a 4.28 40 and 4.12 short shuttle are rare abilities.

Bech – Bech is great in the short area, not a lick of long speed

Ayomanor – Big, long, fast, eager blocker, and relatively inexperienced and in need of refinement.

Armstrong – Tall, fluid mover and route runner, old and slightly less splash.

Johnson – Speedy, twitchy slot option… who only weighed 154 lbs. at the Combine.

Royals – Good, productive player who didn’t feel like he separated the way I’d hope 4.4 would. Has a lot of fans in the draft community.
