2019 Fantasy Football: 2nd Rankings: Position - Running Backs

Running back isn’t as scarce as it has been, and although there is a drop after 9, and another after 17 there is still plenty of production to be found. Even if you have to dig a bit.

Showed Up in ADP but Not in My Top 7 Tiers

Five Notable Things

There were many more differences in my running back rankings, but five situations stood out as really large (but not involving or in the case of one a pair from the same backfield. We start with the biggest difference of the five Damien Harris. I don’t dislike Harris as player and genuinely like him as a prospect but he’s at best third on the depth chart behind vets that have played under Belichick and most likely fourth heading into the season, plus the Michel injury fuss, that caused all the Harris speculation, has abated and I think he’s a better dynasty buy than redraft. Speaking of rookies with roles they haven’t quite claimed, let’s talk about the Eagles backfield situation. Again, it’s not that I hate Miles Sanders it’s just that it looks like a split main role with Howard. Sanders is more talented than Howard, but rookie running backs need to show a propensity for pass protection and being in the right place and in Philly with a QB that has had a number of different injuries that’s probably even more of a point of emphasis than normal. Add in the fact that Pederson loves what Sproles brings to the offense and a muddy pass game situation in the backfield and we’re looking at an offense I don’t see being able to handle the two RB3s that ADP has the Eagles offense supporting. I have one more rookie to talk about and it’s Ty Johnson on the Lions. Johnson doesn’t have an ADP so it defaults to 70. I tried to avoid players without ADP but this is a shot for me. I think Johnson is this year’s Nyheim Hines both role and athleticism (Johnson’s actually bigger). The Lions released Theo Riddick at the start of camp and Kerryon is going to see more targets that still leaves 75-90 backfield targets with no major addition to the receiving corps, a rookie TE, and C.J. Anderson. Someone is going to pick up a lot of those targets and I believe that person is Ty Johnson. The last player of these five I’m lower on is Ronald Jones II. It’s as simple as this, barber just keeps getting work and, much like Chris Carson, I think coaches like the way he gets downhill and consistently gets 3-5 yards. That and Jones had one of the worst debuts a running back can have. The upside for Jones is that he gets a new coaching staff to impress and can put a horrible rookie year behind him. He seems to be in a battle with Barber in camp, and has been working with the 1s exclusively in the preseason but I just can’t get 1.9 yards per carry out of my head from his rookie season. I think my favorite steal in the draft this season is Jalen Richard. Yes, Jacobs is going to be the lead back, and Oakland re-signed Doug Martin but Martin clearly wasn’t a part of the teams plans until Crowell went down while Richard was and should be going forward. To put it another way, I have him getting 140 rushes+targets and that’s tough to find even at the RB4 range where I have him and even more rare at ADPs RB6.
