2019 Fantasy Football: 2nd Rankings: Position - Wide Receivers

Wide receiver is extremely deep and that provides a catch-22. There are a lot of good options, but there is also a lot of variance in the passing game and you get past the first tier I could make a case for any player from 6 on to be a league winner and a wasted pick. Wide receiver also highlights my use of my own projections a bit more this time around. I used them to help me shape my tiers and to differentiate large tiers and that’s certainly something to notice as you consume these rankings.

Five Notable Things

So there are far more differences between me and ADP at WR that’s due to a lot players in the receiver pool and just overall variance when you have to factor in 3-5 players per team that matter at WR and about a dozen per team still currently on a roster. All five notable things look at known or highly draft players and intriguing camp battles. We start in the ‘Burgh with James Washington. I’m 49 spots lower on Washington than ADP and admittedly 96 seems low, but I have him on 58 targets, 333 yards, and a couple touchdowns which is a 50% bump in targets and yards. For many though these aren’t the increases we expected as we exited last season. This offseason Pittsburgh brought in Donte Moncrief, we know what Moncreif is, and so far in camp that’s better and more reliable than Washington. In fact, Washington is fighting with Diontae Johnson, a route running maven from Toledo, for the third outside receiver spot and slot receiver Ryan Switzer for the third most targeted Steeler heading into the season. For those reasons I’ve found it hard to project Washington for much more than a solid but unspectacular bump in numbers and rank this season. Let’s switch to the positive side of things and go to that hot bed of fantasy points, Jacksonville. Nick Foles replaces the irreplaceable Blake Bortles and the passing game should be, if nothing else, more efficient. Dede Westbrook is going to play a major role in that passing game, but I think he’s the co-lead in that passing game with Marqise Lee. Lee came off PUP recently and certainly will need some time to get up the speed but he’s the most talented player and provides a possession option to compliment the speed of Westbrook and sophomore DJ Chark. A return to 2017, and 2016, form (105 tar., 763 yards, 5 TDs) makes him well worth the risk as a WR3/4 and especially where he’s going during drafts (241st overall, 75th among WRs). I love Keke Coutee and thus I am sad. I have Coutee 42 spots below his ADP and although I hate it Coutee dealt with soft tissue injuries at Texas Tech, and in year one with the Texans including the last five games of 2018. He’ll win you weeks if you catch lightning in a bottle, or play best ball, but much like Fredo Corleone he’s breaking my heart. Let’s go with my last negative notable and talk about Parris Campbell. Another player I love but a rookie with hamstring problems in camp who needs all the reps he can get means I’m staying away from Campbell as a rookie even as I stay bullish on him long-term. Because I clearly can’t count, I’m lumping the last two together. Stills and Doctson, are…. Different challenges. Both are the nominal ones on their teams, both have little support in the fantasy community and that’s where the comparison ends. Stills had 553 yards on 40 less targets than 2017 and had the same amount of touchdowns and although regression is certain to come in that department regression towards the previous two seasons target total suggests he should be able to and make him a viable WR3/4 option instead of a WR5/6 option. Doctson has had back to back 78 target seasons, and slightly more consistent QB play this season isn’t going to make him a stud but that level of work makes him a useable player and a fine 5th option on your team.
