2017 College Football: Let the Sorting Process Begin: Deep Dive

Onto our deeper look at week 3. And the slate is good for a week 3, but not as deep as last week.

Alabama-Colorado State should have a lot of good talent on the field, mostly on Alabama, but the final score makes this a highly average rating game, but an Alabama beat down. Ditto for Ohio State who really carries the average against Army. Louisville-Clemson is no surprise, as Clemson has shown an ability to reasonably reload on offense and to sure up losses on defense while bringing a lot of talent back. Wazzou-Oregon State is a little confusing, but my system loves Wazzou, and Tennessee Florida-Tennessee is a highly rated, close game that has all the marking of a pretty boring game.

UAB-Coastal is a game between a school that restarted it’s team this year, and a school that started  playing in 2003 and is in their first full year at the FBS level. Ohio-Kansas is a fine MAC team versus the worst Big XII team. UVA-UCONN might be the worst of the ACC vs the worst of the AAC. App State is a good Sun Belt team versus a very bad Sun Belt team. And Marshall-Kent State is something, but I’m not sure what.

We talked about UF-UT up top, and I’m not sure why I’m so bored by a divisional matchup between two relatively good teams, but that’s where I find myself. Toledo-Tulsa should be a really fun game between two good mid-majors.  Cal-Ole Miss may be the game I’m most intrigued by outside of Clemson-Louisville. What are either of these teams, Ole Miss has been sloppy on defense early, and Cal got a really nice road win against UNC in week 1. LSU-Miss State should be fun and should give us greater insight into how much improved MSU is and how stifling the LSU defense can be week to week.

This set is just 5 of the top 8 or so teams taking on teams of varying strengths. Watch if you want to see something destroyed, but there won’t be much other enjoyment.

That’s week 3, not great, not horrible, and a big step forward for the season to start to be focused.
